On April 9, 2025, volunteers from the Psi Alpha Alpha Chapter conducted the sixth of nine monthly Family Market events for the 2024-2025 school year at Walt Whitman Middle School (WWMS). This marks the chapter's fourth year supporting this essential food distribution program in Fairfax County, Virginia.
The market is part of the Capital Area Food Bank’s distribution initiative. Patrons can choose from over 20 items, including fruits, vegetables, canned goods, dry goods, and more, all organized like a supermarket aisle. Each month, approximately 200 families benefit from the WWMS Family Market.
Organizing this project requires a significant logistical effort. Volunteers must unload food from multiple food bank pallets, unpack, sort, bag, and arrange the items on tables so customers can easily select what they need. Our chapter’s contribution included supporting several student volunteers, teachers, and other organizations with safety, setup, bagging, supervision, and cleanup.
This month, we provided five volunteers: Brothers Phil Benjamin, Brad Caldwell, Dwaine Jefferson, K.C. Jones, and VJ Peoples. Psi Alpha Alpha’s involvement resulted in 6 volunteer hours. The school’s Volunteer Coordinator and Community Coordinator greatly appreciated our support, especially since the set-up was adjusted to a 2-hour earlier start time.
