Fairfax County: Support for Walt Whitman Middle School’s Family Market – 2024-2025
On June 4, 2025, the Psi Alpha Alpha Chapter volunteers conducted the ninth and final monthly Family Market event for the 2024-2025 school year at Walt Whitman Middle School (WWMS). This marks the chapter's fourth year supporting this essential food distribution program in Fairfax County, Virginia.
The market is part of the Capital Area Food Bank’s distribution initiative. Patrons can choose from over 20 items, including fruits, vegetables, canned goods, dry goods, and more, all organized like a supermarket aisle. Each month, approximately 200 families benefit from the WWMS Family Market.
Organizing this project requires a significant logistical effort. Volunteers must unload food from multiple food bank pallets, unpack, sort, bag, and arrange the items on tables so customers can easily select what they need.
This month, we provided six volunteers: Brothers Phil Benjamin, Brad Caldwell, Obbie Franklin, K.C. Jones, Dante Marshall, and Ken Younger. Psi Alpha Alpha’s involvement resulted in 18 volunteer hours. The school’s Principal, Volunteer Coordinator, and Community Coordinator greatly appreciated our ongoing support and remain cautiously optimistic that the program will continue in the Fall.
